When you discover that your child has Down’s syndrome, make sure you give the right early care for a more fulfilling and happy life. Children with down syndrome are born with an extra chromosome, unlike the rest. This extra chromosome leads to developmental issues that will affect you mentally and physically.
Remember, Down’s syndrome is not the end of everything. Many people may inspire a child with down syndrome, while some may criticize and a few of them may not see the reason for your existence.
But as a parent, support your child on the path God has created for her.
Learn to appreciate and be proud of yourself for all your failures and the times you have tried. The only one you need validation from is you. So, before taking care of things around you, you must learn to deal with yourself. Put yourself and your child in a zone of utter comfort. You have to be strong enough to decide what to do and what not to do for your child’s development.
- Support yourself and your baby, too: This is the first thing you can do to make the right decisions in the upcoming days. If you can’t build a support system on your own, it’s better to seek help from friends and family.
- Start a therapy from an early stage: However there aren’t any specific treatments for Down Syndrome, but there are a great set of doctors and therapists are offering efficient therapies. Different children will need a different one to reach their full-potential and respond positively. To name a few there is –
* Physical and Occupational Therapy
* Speech Therapy
* Social and recreation activities
- Stop comparing: You should not forget that your child is unique, and their growth will differ compared to the other children at their age. Your baby may take time to achieve milestones and will have a developmental delay, but that’s okay.
- Handling emotions: You may experience different sets of emotions. Likewise, your baby may undergo various kinds of emotions too. You should encourage your baby to express their feelings too.
- Talk to other parents; When you listen to others’ stories, you may correlate your story with theirs. Listening to real-life stories can realise that you are not alone in this journey. Join a group of parents who share the same uniqueness.
- Confront your challenges: You have to point out the challenges, and you have to find a way to deal with them.
Final thoughts
All babies are the same and equal. They need love, warmth, and attention. You must remember that there’s always a way out. While we understand that raising such a child is a different feeling, nothing is impossible in today’s day and age.
